What is a school council?
The St. Emily Catholic School Council are elected and appointed members that serve in an advisory role to the School Principal and, on occasion, to the Board. In partnership with the school, home and parish we will strive to attain the highest quality education for each child. Council encourages parents to participate and to ensure that the teachings and values of Jesus Christ are integrated in all aspects of school life. St. Emily Catholic School Council supports a nurturing, welcoming, and safe learning environment that celebrates the education of the whole child: spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and emotional.
Why get involved?
You play an important role in the success of your children in school. Studies show that student achievement improves when parents play an active role in their children’s education, and that good schools become even better schools when parents are involved.
Who can be a member?
As a parent of a child at St Emily Catholic School you are already a part of the team, however only elected members may vote on motions brought fourth to the council. Every parent is welcome to attend meetings and bring forth their ideas and concerns.
How are members elected?
Elections for Council positions are held at the first council meeting of the school year. The Principal will provide parents with a minimum of 14 days notice inviting them to put their name forward. Each parent/guardian seeking election must be nominated or self-nominated in writing, must have a child registered at the school, and must declare if he or she is employed by the School Board.
On election night, the previous school year Council shall strike an election committee (made up of the Principal and 2 parents or 2 teacher representatives) to gather the nominations and run the election. The election is done by secret ballot and the candidates are notified immediately of the results.
